Richard W. Hanker, 83, of Defiance, passed away on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at the Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, Ind.

He was born June 30, 1928, the son of Earl and Sophia (Ricica) Hanker in Defiance County, Ohio. On August 9, 1952, he married Eileen Church, who survives. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, the UAW Local 678. Richard worked as a machinist for Defiance Screw Machine 30 years and was U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving besides his wife are a son, Stephen (Shelia) Hanker of Battle Creek, Mich.; grandchildren, Sergio J. Chavez, Javier M. Chavez, Austin R. Mahan, Seth S. Hanker and Shayna E. Hanker; great-grandchildren, Trevor Chavez, Devon Chavez and Layla M. Chavez; close friend, Jeanette Delarber; and a twin brother, Robert Hanker, Defiance.

Preceding him in death were his parents; a daughter, Bridget Mahan; and a sister, Lee Hanker Jones.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 19, 2012, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Hanenkrath-Clevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home, Defiance, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 20, 2012, at noon at the St. John's Catholic Church, Defiance, Ohio. Burial will take place in the Riverview Memory Gardens with VFW graveside military rites being accorded by VFW Post 3360.

Memorials may be directed toward the Defiance Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
